Wholesaler Profile – N & A Group
Robert Cathels – N & A Group
How long has your family been in the Fresh Produce Industry?
My father started in 1956 so we are coming onto 60 years in the industry. In the old market my father and grandfather started as partners with Alfred Moss Pty Ltd to form N&A Fruit Distributers. After a couple of years they bought out Alfred Moss and it all started from there.
When did you start working in the industry and tell us about any other jobs you have had?
I went to university and obtained a law degree, then worked as a commercial lawyer for a couple of years. In 1986 my father spoke to me and said “speak now or forever hold your peace.” So I had a good think about it and decided to come out to the markets.
What are the main jobs that you do in your role and what do you like about your job?
My main role these days is running the Group. I’m fortunate to have a great team of people heading up the different departments and that frees me up to have a broader strategic view of the business.
What team do you barrack for?
Manly and then the Waratahs.
What are your other interests and past times?
I like to have a surf in my free time, even in winter and of course, spend my time with family.
What would you like to see happening in the industry?
If you get me started on that we will be here for hours there are so many things so we best just leave this question.
What new or different practices are you looking to introduce to your business?
It is take up of technology as the infrastructure within our business which is important, together with our continuing investment in production on the farm. We have come a long way in the last 15 years and it is the way forward.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I will still be involved, still driving the business, still investing in the produce industry.
