The Australian Banana Association
The Australian Banana Association Ltd is a not for profit industry association made up of banana wholesalers, agents, growers, packaging and pallet firms, transporters and retailers all involved with the banana industry. The NSW Chamber conducts the secretariat for the organisation which endeavours to provide a rounded approach to issues affecting the industry.
Whilst the ABA is very small in comparison to the large grower groups, it has membership from around Australia and absolutely packs a punch in influencing important aspects of the industry. The ABA has been involved in aspects of the continuing HIA funded Banana Carton project and has also been involved in information sessions by the Department of Primary Industries and the Qld Biosecurity Department of Agriculture and Fisheries regarding the Panama TR4 detections in Queensland. Important workshops have been held here at the Markets at the SML Conference Centre regarding the ongoing carton project and the Panama TR4 detections in Queensland. In addition banana growers and ABA members are kept informed of pricing, quality and quantity trends each week for receivals and sales around Australia through the 4KZ and 4AM radio reports which the source information supplied by members in each state. These broadcasts are recorded and relayed to all members each week.
Continuing the charitable disposition of the Markets the ABA members at Sydney Markets donated bananas to the Cancer Council NSW involved in the City2Surf run in 2014 and will do the same for the 9th of August run in 2015.
