Australian Potatoes Great Come Back
COVID-19 saw potatoes sales crash when the lockdown restrictions were implemented, but now demand has become strong and supply has returned to normal, despite several storms hindering production. Demand for fresh potatoes has increased as they are seen as a hardy vegetable with a good shelf life that holds up well, particularly when purchased online. There has also been a noticeable shift in sentiment towards locally grown produce and supporting farmers. Processed potatoes (French Fry) have also increased in sales. However, it is feared that this won’t last due to the international oversupply of potatoes threatening to make its way to Australian shores. The potato industry has been lobbying the Federal Government to ensure that no dumping of frozen product occurs, to allow overall volumes to remain steady.
