Your Local Greengrocer Innovate to Help with Food Security and Social Distancing
Sydney, 21 April 2020: James Kellaway, CEO of Freshmark, the NSW fresh produce industry peak industry body, releases the current statement about how greengrocers are better equipped to allow customers to put food on the table and stay within the confines of social distancing protocols.
“Your local greengrocers’ focus during the COVID-19 crisis is to ensure that Australians have peace of mind when it comes to food security and social distancing.
“With the recent food hoarding, it has become clear that Australians are concerned about where their food is coming from and if there will be enough for everyone.
“Being part of the central market system allows greengrocers to source fresh produce every day with no limit on supply. They can better accommodate special dietary requirements and not be constrained by the highest value produce most typically reflected on the shelves of major supermarkets.
“Innovation is at the heart of what makes greengrocers so adaptable to this current crisis. Their small size has allowed them to curb social distancing issues commonly associated with big supermarket chains.
“Strict rules that promote active social distancing include;
- defining queuing areas with 1.5m segmenting lines both inside and outside the shop; encouraging only one member of the family to be in the shop;
- requesting customers to handle their own produce at the register;
- asking customers to use a card over cash;
- reducing the handling of produce, including avoiding cutting up produce like watermelon and the provision of full-time delivery services to help support their customers who are self-isolating.
“Your local greengrocer has the local community spirit at the heart of all that it does and they will continue to adapt to the ever-changing demands of COVID-19, to help limit contact and the spread of the virus.”
